Cucapa
is a Kumiai Indian community with a water system serving 33 families
(service connections) and a population of approximately 180.
The community is located on Mexican Highway 5 about 56 km south
of Mexicali in Baja California Mexico.
The community is provided treated water from Comision Estatal de
Servicos Publicos de Mexicali, CESPM, the local water agency.
The community CESPM water service is metered and they pay
approximately 50-100 pesos per month for water services.
The community also has a hauled water supply brought in by the
Agua Marina Company, for drinking water.
The
water source is from a canal that is apparently drawn off the Colorado
River. The water is then
treated with a coagulant, sent through granulated activated carbon
filters, chlorinated with the Accu Tab system, and then sent out to the
distribution system via two hydropnuematic tanks.
The community system appeared to have adequate distribution
system pressure.

* NOTE: Microbiological data generated by the JA JAN Coalition with the assistance of CUNA, Aqualink, and trained community members The
water treatment system seemed to be in good operating order and
maintained very well. Water
quality tests show a good raw water supply and low amount of Total
Coliform in the distribution system and no presence of E.coli.
The system seems to be in good condition and providing an
adequate water supply. However, most community members object to the
taste of chlorine in the water and buy commercially produced drinking
water, which is readily available.
Water System Improvement Recommendations The
community water system is owned and operated by CESPM and is in good
condition. No improvements
appeared to be necessary.
